Damoyee Janai Neroes, known professionally as Damoyee Janai, is an award-winning, classically-trained American musician, composer, singer, songwriter, producer and recording artist who started studying piano, music theory and composition at the age of 2. Damoyee Janai has the distinct and rare gift of absolute pitch. As a vocalist, she is a contralto with a three-octave range and can flawlessly sing from C3 over an octave below middle C to soprano C6. As a multi-instrumentalist, she plays piano, keyboards, synth, guitar, electric bass, melodica, clarinet, ukelele, dulcimer and many percussion instruments. Damoyee Janai has over 16 years of music theory and composition training, and is highly proficient with Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, MainStage, Ableton, and Sibelius.
Damoyee Janai independently released her ﬁrst album, titled Thankful, at age 13 for which she wrote the music and lyrics, performed piano, vocals and harmonies, and served as co-executive producer. When she was 16 years old, Damoyee Janai independently released a 12-track studio album, From the Bottom of My Heart. In addition to lyrics, music composition, vocals, piano and percussion, she produced the album.
Damoyee Janai signed to Dallas-based indie record label State Fair Records in 2019 and released two new singles under the label: Insane and Hold On. A third single, Independent, was released to radio August 9, 2019. Damoyee Janai’s third album is scheduled to release in the fall of 2019.
Damoyee Janai is an extraordinary music artist having earned recognition at the local, state, national and international levels for her work in music theory, composition, piano and vocal performance across multiple music genres. One of her highest honors is the prestigious once-in-a-lifetime Paderewski Medal for piano playing and music theory awarded by the American College of Musicians. Damoyee Janai is a 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts semi-finalist and national YoungArts winner in two categories: singer/songwriter and jazz voice. 2019 was a stellar year for Damoyee Janai. She won the DownBeat Student Music Award in the blues/pop/rock soloist category as a pianist and vocalist and became a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Vocal Soloist Award at the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival for her performance on 'Round Midnight by Miles Davis, arrangement by Darmon Meader of the New York Voices. She was named a Rising Star by the Dallas Jazz Piano Society. Also in 2019, Damoyee Janai composed a new song, The Lights Are Rising, for AT&T Performing Arts Center to accompany the ascension of The Moody Foundation Chandelier prior to every production at Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Texas. The Lights Are Rising made its debut on July 27, 2019 when the chandelier ascended before a sold-out crowd for An Evening with Iyanla Vanzant during Vanzant’s Acts of Faith Remix Tour. In 2018, Damoyee Janai became a national silver medalist at the 40th Annual NAACP ACT-SO Competition in the music composition category for her song, The Willow Tree. In 2017, she won Best Original Soundtrack in the International Online Web Fest awards for her film score work on Fauk My Life, an independent web series. Damoyee Janai is an alumna of House of Blues Music Forward Foundation Bringing Down the House program for emerging artists. She participated in the program in 2015 as a solo artist and in 2016 with her now defunct band, DiDi’s Garden.
Damoyee Janai has performed at many venues of varying sizes throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area and beyond, including headliner on the legendary main stage at House of Blues Dallas. In 2018, she made her Los Angeles, CA debut as a main stage headliner at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Also in 2018, she performed on program with Erykah Badu, The RH Factor and Ashlin Parker & Trumpet Maﬁa at Improvisations: A Tribute to Roy Hargrove at the Montgomery Arts Theater in Dallas, Texas. At the tribute, Damoyee Janai performed as a vocal soloist and keyboardist on songs by Roy Hargrove and The RH Factor. In 2019, Damoyee Janai performed at the 50th Anniversary New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and at The Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City.
Damoyee Janai was born October 4, 2000 in Dallas, Texas and raised in Arlington, Texas. She has two younger siblings, both who are athletes. Damoyee Janai is an alumna of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Erykah Badu, Edie Brickell, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones). She was awarded a full-tuition scholarship for 4 years to attend Berklee College of Music (Roy Hargrove, Lalah Hathaway, Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, John Mayer, Charlie Puth, Esperanza Spalding) beginning in the fall of 2019. At Berklee, she plans to major in ﬁlm scoring.
